They Will Kill You Exclusive: Zazie Beetz reveals character Asia Reeves’ fight for survival and how she prepared for it

A New York ex-convict is looking for a job after being released from prison. Answering an ad for a housekeeper role, she gets caught up in a group of people going missing in town. Written and directed by Kirill Sokolov, alongside Alex Litvak, Zazie Beetz plays protagonist Asia Reeves, and spoke about her work specifically for the film.

The actress explained how director Kirill Sokolov planned ‘every minute, every second of this film’, which they discussed over Zoom, which ultimately made them decide to take on the film. As far as his own horror movie experience is concerned, he revealed that although They’ll Kill You has its fair share of jump scares, it doesn’t overwhelm him. However, he confirmed that it has ‘bruises, blood and eyes’ which makes the film interesting.

Sharing how her character struggles to survive the night, she revealed, “Virgil is a satanic cult, and they have human sacrifices, and Asia comes after her. Normally, they look for people who are alone,[who]won’t have any people they don’t expect they can fight back. So, she’s fighting, and they’re totally shocked. They’re not necessarily fighters themselves, And Asia’s not a trained military person or anything. And she’s kind of clumsy at times. Her character is not this machine, but she’s doing her best with the equipment and the situation in front of her.”

Revealing how she trained for the film, Zazie Beetz shared, “Actually, I was shooting a different movie in Cape Town, and I started training while I was there, then I went home for a month and got a trainer, Michael Olajide, who is incredible. He specializes in boxing, he was a boxer, and he’s a really beautiful soul, beautiful man. It was great. When I was at home, five a week A day, I would train with him for about two hours, just incorporating the boxing motions into my body as much as possible, then I went to the set, and I was doing stunt training every day for three weeks before we started shooting.

Sharing details of the actual work they did at They Will Kill You, he said, “We would train, but the focus was more on conditioning a little bit, and then learning the fights, which is a little more choreography-based, so it’s actually less physically taxing than working out, lifting, and doing things like that. We were doing all this, and your girl was tired! But they were really big on not bugging me, which I really appreciated. It made such a big difference. I just can’t stress it enough. I think that gave me the stamina to do all the action in this film.”

Meanwhile, They Will Kill You is all set to premiere on March 27, 2026.
