The Google original company alphabet is allegedly transferring a part of its pixel phone production from Vietnam to India. In August 2024, Google began to manufacture its pixel phone in India, which began with Pixel 8. It was the first pixel phone to be manufactured in India. Pixel 8A has also been gathered in India. Of the Pixel 9 series, only Pixel 9 phones are made in India.
Now, with the steep tariffs imposed by the US on Vietnam, the alphabet is considering taking a part of its global pixel phone production to India, according to one Atte Report. Bharat Today Tech He also reached Google for a statement on the same. The company has not yet responded.
Allegedly, the change in production aims to complete the Google Pixel phone shipment for the US market. Informed changes in production are an indication that, similar to other technical giants (such as apple), the alphabet also wants to reduce its dependence on Vietnam, especially the US has imposed heavy tariffs on the country.
For the move, the alphabet is allegedly in conversation with its two contract manufacturing partners in India: Foxconn and Dixon Technologies. According to the report, the company already has the first round of discussion with the manufacturers.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has announced tariffs on the import of Vietnam. The tariff is about half on the goods imported from India, with 26 percent.
On 9 April, the US announced a 90-day stagnation on mutual tariffs, 10 percent of the baseline tariff still remains in India.
These tariffs have given a tough competition to smartphone companies. Earlier this month, Apple allegedly used chartered cargo flights to transport iphones from India to America – about 600 tonnes – or up to 1.5 million. The move followed a ramp-up in Indian production as Apple looked at the tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump.
There were brief reports that the Trump administration announced a significant discount from tariffs on a series of electronic goods – including smartphones, laptops, and semiconductor chips – most of which are imported from China.
The exemption applied to goods entering the United States or issued from Bandha warehouses from April 5. The decision was to benefit prominent technical companies such as Apple, Samsung and NVIDIA, all of which allegedly expressed concern that tariffs would rapidly increase the cost of consumer electronics. However, the US President soon confirmed that the discount is temporary and the tariffs would return in “months or two months”.
