Filmmaker Christopher Nolan odyssey It has lived up to the immense hype surrounding its release and has taken a strong opening at the Indian box office. The epic, headlined by Matt Damon, lived up to pre-release trade expectations with impressive first-day sales.

According to initial estimates of trade website Saknilk, The Odyssey It earned Rs 20.76 crore on the first day in India, while its net collection stood at Rs 17.40 crore. The film was shown in 8,413 shows across the country and recorded an overall occupancy of 48.7 percent, mainly due to strong demand for premium formats, especially IMAX screenings.

As per initial language-wise estimates, the English version topped the box office with an estimated gross of Rs 13.75 crore, followed by the Hindi-dubbed version at the second position with around Rs 1.90 crore. The Telugu version collected around Rs 1.10 crore, while the Tamil version added an estimated Rs 65 lakh.

The English version also had the highest viewership and recorded nearly 70 percent occupancy across 2,113 shows. In comparison, the Hindi version achieved about 10 percent occupancy out of 1,468 shows. The Telugu and Tamil versions recorded better engagements of around 25 per cent across 346 shows and 22 per cent across 227 shows respectively.

As expected from a Nolan spectacle, premium large format screenings emerged as the key driver of viewership. The film’s English IMAX 2D showing recorded an excellent occupancy of 73.86 percent, underscoring audiences’ preference to experience the epic on the biggest screen possible.

odyssey It also got a big boost due to its excellent advance booking. With approximately 396,000 tickets sold before release, the film recorded one of the strongest pre-sales for a Hollywood title in India.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the epic features an ensemble cast led by Matt Damon alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson. Based on Homer’s classic poem, the film chronicles Odysseus’s perilous 10-year journey back to his kingdom Ithaca after the fall of Troy. This is Nolan’s first directorial film after the Oscar-winning blockbuster oppenheimer (2023).
