A Complete Unknown director James Mangold believes Chalamet brings a “poetic” touch to his rendition of legendary folk singer Bob Dylan. The Academy Award-nominated actor established his identity in the industry after delivering blockbuster performances in Wonka, Dune and Dune: Part 2.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, James Mangold discussed Chalamet’s performance. He said, “I think he performs in a very poetic way, which through his performance really sympathetically suggests how someone who wants to make music, but doesn’t want to put people in front of them all the time.”

He revealed that he sometimes refers to the actor as Bob, and Mangold praised the singer for clearly expressing the joy he felt in interacting with his community and making music.

He said, “I think they did a great job fleshing out the character.” According to him, ‘Timmy’ really captured Dylan’s journey from being a 19-year-old boy to a singer who told stories about working at a carnival.

The director said, “Timmy finds a way to take us there…I think it’s real acting genius the way he carries this character.”

What can you expect from ‘A Complete Unknown’?

The story revolves around folk music icon Bob Dylan and his rise to fame in the 60s. The film’s official synopsis says, “A young Bob Dylan transformed folk music’s role in the world through electric and rock, marking one of the most transformative moments in 20th century music.”

Actress Monica Barbaro stars as Joan Baez and Elle Fanning as Sylvie Rousseau alongside the Dune actor as Dylan’s girlfriend. Although the release date is still under wraps, the producer has promised that the biographical drama will hit theaters before the end of the year!
