Foldable phones are slowly making their way into people’s hearts as you can use them like a traditional smartphone and even open them up to view on a bigger screen or do multitasking. While this technology is still quite expensive for the average consumer, something more exciting is about to come in the foldable smartphone space – a tri-folding phone. Confused? Well, Huawei will be launching it in China next month but before that happens, TECNO has shown off the first tri-fold concept phone.

TECNO has shared a video of its first tri-fold smartphone concept, the Phantom Ultimate 2. While the device won’t be available in stores in the near future, this technological marvel offers an exciting glimpse into the future of mobile devices.

At first glance, the Phantom Ultimate 2 looks like your typical smartphone, but the name itself suggests that it is revolutionary. When folded, it has a 6.48-inch screen. But upon opening it, the device transforms into a massive 10-inch LTPO OLED display with 1,620 x 2,880px resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio. Tri-fold phones may make it difficult for brands to sell tablets and in the future only those brands will survive who offer next-level creative features for content creators. We have also seen concepts of foldable laptops and now foldable phones coming in tablet size will end the tablet market. It is likely that tablets may be sold only in the budget segment.

Talking about the Phantom Ultimate 2, it comes with the integration of Tecno’s TDDI technology, which combines the display driver and touch sensor into a single chip. This innovation improves the touch responsiveness of the device and also allows for the screen hovering feature. Despite its large size, the device (seemingly) remains impressively thin – only 11mm when folded. This mechanism, tested for 300,000 folds, is engineered to minimize screen creases.

TECNO didn’t stop there. The Phantom Ultimate 2 also boasts the thinnest battery cover ever, measuring just 0.25mm. The possibilities are endless with this tri-fold phone. TECNO shows off a variety of use cases, including a laptop mode, in which the bottom half of the screen turns into a keyboard for taking notes, and a tent mode, which places the display in two equal parts in opposite directions for face-to-face conversations with live translation.

Furthermore, the massive 10-inch screen supports multi-window mode, allowing users to run three or more apps simultaneously, making multitasking more seamless and efficient.

While Tecno hasn’t yet announced a commercial release for the Phantom Ultimate 2, its launch signals an exciting development in the foldable market. With Huawei also set to launch its tri-fold smartphone in China next month, the race to redefine mobile technology is well underway. The future of smartphones is here, and it’s folding in more ways than one.
