TCL announces 50 NxtPaper and 50 Pro NxtPaper smartphones

TCL recently announced two new smartphones with NextPaper display technology, which aims to reduce strain on your eyes. These phones are called the 50 NextPaper and 50 Pro NextPaper, and they have more in common with their names than you might think.

For starters they share the same 6.8-inch NXTpaper display with Full HD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The NXTpaper panel is 2.5D curved at the edges, and since it doesn’t allow for a fingerprint scanner underneath, the sensor is embedded in the power key.

There’s a punch hole for the selfie camera, which houses an 8MP sensor on the 50 and a 32MP sensor on the 50 Pro. There’s no difference on the back, though – there’s a 108MP main, 8MP ultrawide, and 2MP macro cameras on both phones.

Another difference between the 50 and 50 Pro is storage. The former has 256GB, while the latter has 512GB, and both have a micro SD slot.

The phones feature a Dimensity 6300 chipset by MediaTek with 8GB of RAM and an octa-core CPU. They come with Android 14 and TCL has promised two years of OS upgrades and support until 2029 for units available in the EU.

The NxtPaper technology makes the screen look like paper without any reflections. This time, TCL has implemented a physical button on the right side below the power key, which instantly switches between Normal, Color Paper and Max Ink modes. This last mode lets you get up to 7 days of reading or up to 26 days of standby. It also lets you choose up to four apps to run in this mode and suspends all the rest to give you more peace and quiet while you read.

Both TCL phones have a 5,010 mAh battery that supports up to 33W charging, but only the Pro comes with an adapter in the box. The situation is the same with the available accessories – the 50 and 50 Pro can work with a specified flip case and T-Pen stylus, but only the Pro will have a so-called PC case.

TCL offers the 50 NxtPaper 5G and 50 Pro NxtPaper 5G in gray, blue, white, pink, and gold. The 50 will be available in the EU only for €229, while the 50 Pro will sell for €299 in the EU and LATAM regions.
