We have grown up watching many horror films in Indian cinema. Some of these films managed to scare us, while some made us laugh out loud. Most of us are on the edge of our seats to watch witches, dancers singing in Bengali, the spirit of an old man becoming a friend of a child, people running from zombies and more. A section of the audience loves to watch horror-comedy films like Stree. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, Munjya is a horror-comedy film starring Sharvari Wagh, Abhay Verma and Mona Singh in the lead roles. It is the story of a mischievous and vengeful spirit.

The film begins with a young boy who accidentally releases an evil spirit while practicing black magic. The spirit, in the form of a creature, begins to harass the women of the village.

2. Kakuda

Another Aditya Sarpotdar directorial venture, Kakuda, was released in July this year. Starring Sonakshi Sinha, Saqib Saleem and Riteish Deshmukh, the story is set against the backdrop of Rathodi village.

The village is stuck in time because it has been cursed by a dwarf ghost, Kakuda. In the village, every house has two doors, and one must be open for the ghost who enters the village at 7:15 p.m.

3. The Labyrinth

Directed by Priyadarshan, Bhool Bhulaiyaa starred Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan and Shiney Ahuja in the lead roles. Shiney played the role of Siddhart Chaturvedi, an NRI who returns to his ancestral home and decides to stay there with his wife Avni (played by Vidya Balan).

The couple does not pay heed to the ghost’s warning. Soon, they start experiencing scary incidents. This leads Siddharth to call his psychiatrist friend Dr. Aditya Srivastava (played by Akshay Kumar) to his mansion.

4. Phone Ghost

Phone Bhoot is a supernatural comedy film to be released in 2022. The film stars Katrina Kaif, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Ishaan Khattar in the lead roles. The story revolves around two unemployed youths Major and Gullu, played by Siddhant and Ishaan, who aspire to exorcise ghosts.

One day, they organize a ghost Halloween party and end up meeting a ghost named Ragini, played by Katrina. Ragini promises to help them and earn money, and in return asks for a favor of helping the souls attain salvation.

5. Bhoot Police

Starring Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez and Yami Gautam, Bhoot Police was released in 2021. The horror comedy sees Saif and Arjun play two brothers, Vibhooti and Chironji, who run a ghost exorcism business. However, both of them have no knowledge about exorcism and only earn from people’s superstition.

The story begins with a girl in a village in Rajasthan going to exorcise a ghost, who is possessed by her late grandfather. Later it is revealed that she is faking it because her family is pressuring her to get married.

6. The Wolf

Directed by Amar Kaushik, Bhediya starred Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles. The story revolves around Varun’s character Bhaskar and his cousin Janardhan (played by Abhishek Banerjee) who travel to Arunachal Pradesh for a road construction project.

Things change when Bhaskar is bitten by a wolf in the forests of Ziro. Bhaskar is rescued by Dr. Anika (Kriti Sanon), a local veterinarian. Soon his body begins to change and he slowly turns into a werewolf.

7. Roohi

  • Cast: Rajkumar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Sharma

Roohi, starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, was directed by Hardik Mehta. The horror comedy film stars Rajkummar as Bhavra Pandey and Varun Sharma as Kattani Qureshi.

The two kidnap Ruhi (Janhvi Kapoor’s character) as a task given by a kidnapper. However, they later discover that Ruhi is possessed by a spirit.

8. Go Goa Gone

  • Genre: Zombie Action-Comedy

Go Goa Gone stars Saif Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, Vir Das and Anand Tiwari in lead roles. Directed by Raj and DK, the film is being described as India’s first stoner film. Kunal, Vir and Anand play three friends who go to Goa to relax.

One day they attend a rave party in Goa, organised by the Russian mafia who sell an expensive drug to the guests. Things take a turn when they discover that the island is infested with zombies. They soon meet Saif’s character Boris, who kills the zombies with the help of his friend.

9. Bhootnath

  • Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Aman Siddiqui, Juhi Chawla and Shahrukh Khan
  • IMDb Rating: 6.4
  • Release Year: 2008

Remember when Amitabh Bachchan played a ghost in Bhootnath? The 2008 film also featured Aman Siddiqui, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Juhi Chawla. Shah Rukh Khan played an extended cameo role in the film.

Bhootnath was a Hindi adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s 1887 short story The Canterville Ghost. Big B and Aman’s friendship as Bhootnath and Banku was the highlight of the film.
