Srinivasan passes away: Rajinikanth, Prithviraj Sukumaran express grief; Mohanlal, Kamal Haasan paid emotional tribute

The demise of veteran actor-filmmaker Srinivasan has come as a shock to the entire Malayalam industry. The veteran filmmaker was rushed to the hospital where he breathed his last today, December 20, 2025. Celebrities have expressed grief over the demise of Srinivasan.

Veteran Malayalam star Sreenivasan’s long battle with illness has ended in tragedy. The 69-year-old veteran was being treated at his home in Udayamperur after his health deteriorated. Despite being taken to a hospital in Thripunithura, he was declared dead on Saturday morning.

Soon after, superstar Mohanlal wrote a heartfelt note for his late friend and co-star on his Facebook account. In her long note, the Padmashree awardee complained that her friend Srini left without saying goodbye. He further expressed, "I don’t know how to describe my relationship with Srini in words. Our love relationship was far beyond the definition of people who had worked together in films."

In his tribute to the late legend, Kamal Haasan said, "Some artists entertain, some enlighten, some provoke. #Srinivasan did all this, with a smile that was truthful and a laugh that was responsible. My respect to an amazing mind. Deepest condolences to his family and fans."

Superstar Rajinikanth told Times of India, "This news is a big shock for me. Srinivasan is my good friend. He and I studied together at the Cinema Institute. He was a great actor. And an even better person. May his soul rest in peace."

In his brief note for the late star, Prithviraj Sukumaran wrote on his Instagram stories, "Farewell to one of the greatest writer/director/actors of all time! Thanks for the laughs and thoughts! Rest in peace, legend!"

Actor-director Basil Joseph posted a picture of Srinivasan on his Instagram account and wrote, "Srini Sir, thank you for the laughter and warmth you gave us. You were a big part of our childhood and our happiest memories. You may be gone, but you will live on forever through your work. Rest in peace, legend."

Veteran filmmaker Sathyan Anthikad told reporters, "I’m in a situation where I can’t react. We have a strong relationship with each other. I used to visit him once in two weeks (since he became ill). I never thought he would leave so soon."

In her note on X, playback singer KS Chitra shared, "I am deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Srinivas sir. I had the privilege of singing for many of his films. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

Popular actor Mukesh also said this to the media. Mathrubhumi quoted him as saying that Sreenivasan would speak his mind about a script or film no matter who came to him, even if it was an emerging writer. Apparently, some people were afraid to even approach him.

"His questions were always to the point and his insight was unmatched. Srinivasan’s laughter also has its own uniqueness. I had expressed my desire that we should produce a film together and thus the film ‘Katha Parayampol’ was jointly produced. The moments spent with Srinivasan are golden moments. Even the criticism of his films was full of humor.”
