Spotify’s faulty Hifi update may come very soon

It seems that Spotify Hifi may fall for some time in the near future, if the latest leaks are believed.

Spicetify, which is a command-line interface tool for the desktop spotify client, has posted several images on its social media account, mentioning this upcoming feature within the latest V1.2.66 update.

For the beginning, the most pronounced cheap route is the appearance of a new option within the audio quality setting dropdown, which includes a defective setting that can provide 24-bit/44.1 kHz audio in Flac. Onboarding for the app also includes mention of defective audio for premium customers.

In addition to the faulty, it seems that some new audio in Spotify also has its sleeves, which when pairing with a compatible pair of headphones claims to offer “cleaner, more natural sound”. Further digging in the code revealed the mention of spatial audio without further expansion.

What is not visible in these screenshots is what technology is being used for spatial audio, because there is no mention of specific codes such as dolby atomos. It is possible that the above cleaner, natural sound feature can use the ownership spatial audio technique of Spotify that only works with selected headphones. In addition, there is also no mention of high resolution audio, as the sample rate seems to be a top out on 44.1KHz with CD-quality.

Of course, all this was dug with the help of state facility in spictify tools and none of it is accessible in the current app. Even with the equipment, you can only see mention of new features and really do not use them.

Spotify announced its defective Hifi facility in early 2021. While the company did not provide a date, it was clear that this feature was imminent and most likely was coming to a higher pricing level than regular premiums. Then, Apple decided to rain on the parade of Spotify and launched its own defective audio features with high resolution audio and dolby atmos without any additional cost.

This possibility dropped the air from the spotify’s sails as the company immediately dropped all the talks of the HIFI feature and adopted the radio silence. It seems that it was fully caught by the guard and has been trying to form a viable plan to start service since then. It is possible that the company may still charge more for the HIFI scheme, but we have heard for years that additional materials will be included to justify it and the company is just creating a lot of material library outside the music.

For now, we still do not have an exact date, so this feature either, two months later, or never.
