Spice Up Our Love review: A cheeky K-drama spin-off that will leave you yearning for more
The No Gain No Love spin-off Spice Up Our Love only has two episodes and focuses on the other main couple – Bok Gyu-hyun and Nam Ja-yeon. But is that your cup of tea? Read the reviews and find out.

Release date: October 3, 2024
Most K-dramas don’t get a spin-off featuring another couple, but No Gain No Love breaks the mold. Its spin-off, Spice Up Our Love, is based on the love story of the second lead, Nam Ja-yeon (Han Ji-hyun) and Bok Gyu-hyun (Lee Sang-yi). And, trust me, it’s a fun ride!
The story begins with a clever twist: Son Hye-young’s younger sister, Nam Ja-yeon, is a successful webtoon writer who shreds online haters like biscuit crumbs. But, one day, she stumbles upon a particularly harsh comment that hits too close to home. Instead of shrugging it off, she decides to sue the troll – who turns out to be none other than her sister’s boss, Bok Gyu-hyun.
Feeling guilty, Gyu-hyun writes an apology letter, although he only knows her by her surname Yeon Bo-ra. But Ja-yeon, who is still scarred by the trauma it caused, is unwilling to forgive. She wants revenge – or so she says, telling Gyu-hyun that she would prefer to see him dead. When Gyu-hyun’s attempt to retrieve the discarded letter ends in a dramatic accident, Ja-yeon faints, overcome by the weight of her words.
Things get even stranger when she wakes up in the hospital – not as Ja-yeon, but as Seo Yeon-soo, the leading lady of her own webtoon. Furthermore, her romantic interest in the webtoon, Ha-joon, does not look like the person it based her on. The character now has Gyu-hyun’s face instead. So, does she fall in love with him again, or does she chase the shadow of her first love? Drama, drama, drama!
With only two episodes, Spice Up Our Love focuses entirely on Ja-yeon and Gyu-hyun. By the time the second episode ends, you’ll be left wanting more – especially if you liked the second lead in No Gain No Love. Lee Sang-yi and Han Ji-hyun gave exceptional performances. Both Ji-hyun and Sang-yi have made their mark with dramas like Penthouse, Hometown Cha Cha Cha, and Youth of May. Get them together and their chemistry here is amazing. Ji-hyun effortlessly switches between quirky Ja-yeon and sultry Yeon-soo, while Sang-yi matches her move, bringing her own quirky charm to the table. And let’s not forget the OST, A World For Us – it adds just the right touch of emotion to Gyu-hyun’s heartfelt confessions. If you don’t know, Sang-yi sang the OST.
If you’ve only watched No Gain No Love and thought Ja-yeon’s behavior towards Gyu-hyun after waking up was a bit inconsistent, this spin-off fills in the blanks. Suddenly, everything makes sense, right?
Highlights of the show? Well, the soy sauce and sausage scenes will definitely make you feel the depth of the drama. The only downside is the short runtime – just two episodes didn’t do justice to the character arcs, leading to some emotional beats falling short. In particular, the ending felt a little too rushed, as if there were still a few more layers to peel off. Also, it wasn’t as ‘spicy’ as we thought.
Overall, Spice Up Our Love is a fun and cheeky spin-off that is worth checking out. It’s got heart, humor, and a touch of the meta storytelling we’ve come to love in K-dramas like Extraordinary U and W. While it’s not perfect, it definitely spices things up and makes for a memorable addition to 2024’s . Drama line-up. It’s a shame we didn’t get a few more episodes to delve deeper into this unique love story!
