‘Sorry, but I can’t offer you a US visa today’: Indian student tells of F1 visa rejection. Redditors point out a mistake

Student tells about F1 visa interview rejection. Redditors point out the mistake.

It can be difficult to get a US visa approved at the Consulate counter after a 10-minute interview. Officials may not clearly state the reason for rejection, leaving applicants more confused about what they said wrong. A student shared on Reddit about his experience of interviewing at the Mumbai Consulate only to be rejected, but the same happened to many people who reported at the special counter.Do you feel any disadvantage or racism in this country? This was the first question the visa officer asked, this country is India. Often, people come to the US on an F1 visa but then apply for asylum citing racism and persecution in their home country. The Redditor’s answer to this question was ‘no’, which was correct in this case as the Redditor had not expressed any intention of settling in the US.The Redditor was then asked about Michigan Technological University and the reason for choosing it to pursue MS in Biomedical Engineering. “Michigan Tech is an elite R1 rated research university that offers practical medical device training,” the Redditor said. The visa officer asked which other universities the student had applied to.“Johns Hopkins University, Rensselaer Polytechnic, University of Maryland, Michigan Tech, Yale,” was the answer.“I’m sorry, but I can’t grant you a US visa today…” said the visa officer.Social media users were quick to point out where the Redditor went wrong. This was the choice of the universities. He said that the choice of five universities ranges from Tier-1 to Tier-3 universities in the US, which may give the visa officer the impression that the Redditor wants to enter the US at any cost.Another pointed out that applicants from Yale and Johns Hopkins do not apply to Michigan Tech.
