Sonali Bendre talks about one of the biggest lessons of her cancer journey, saying that if her disease had been detected earlier, she might not have reached Stage 4. The actor, who was diagnosed with metastatic cancer in 2018, explained how the silence surrounding the disease delayed important conversations about testing and awareness.

During a recent conversation forbes indiaSonali talked about the emotional strength she got from her family and close friends during her treatment in New York, which included chemotherapy and surgery.

He said his strong support system became his greatest source of strength during the fight. Sonali said that while many people are open about their journeys, her experience attracted widespread attention because she is a public figure. After sharing her diagnosis she also realized that cancer is still not discussed openly.

Reflecting on the stigma associated with the disease, he explained how people often avoid even saying the word cancer.

The actor said, “It was a taboo subject, and I didn’t realize it. They were referring to it as C disease. They wouldn’t even name it. I realized that, for me, I didn’t need to get to stage four. If I had gotten tested and found out early, I wouldn’t have had to go through the hardship that I went through.”

The 51-year-old actor stressed that timely diagnosis can make a huge difference and said it should not be considered hopeless if cancer is detected at an early stage. He also questioned why the conversation about preventive health checkups remains limited.

Speaking about using your experience for a greater cause, Sonali said she is proud of her journey It helped people speak more openly about the disease.

She said, “I’ve realized that when I’m in the public eye—maybe that’s what I can give back. I can bring conversation around it. More than anything in my life—if you’re good looking, it’s your genes; I’ve been given opportunities. I’m grateful for the opportunities. But one thing I’m grateful for is that the conversation around cancer has changed so much in these 7 years, and that’s because of my disease.”

He said, “The way people are talking about it now. The way they are being tested, it wasn’t like that before. It makes me happy; I feel like it’s the only thing I’ve done in my life.”
