In short

  • Your gut health and skin health are interrelated
  • Unhealthy gut can cause many skin problems
  • By taking care of your stomach, you can enhance the beauty of your skin

Have you ever wondered why your skin doesn’t seem to make a difference despite all the skincare you do? It may not be because of what’s happening outside or what beauty regime you’re following. Instead, it may be related to what’s going on inside your body, especially your stomach.

Your gut, including your stomach, intestines, and colon, is important for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, and excreting waste. It also plays an important role in your overall health.

Interestingly, there is a deep connection between your gut health and the condition of your skin.

When your gut isn’t functioning properly, it can impact the appearance and health of your skin.

india today I spoke to several experts to learn more about this gut-skin connection.

What is the connection?

Dr Shubham Prasad, Consultant, Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Sciences, Fortis Escorts, Delhi, told us, “Gut health and skin health are closely linked to each other through the gut-skin axis. This bi-directional relationship means that the condition of the gut can impact skin health, and vice versa.”

The doctor explained that the gut microbiome, a complex community of microorganisms in the digestive tract, plays an important role in maintaining systemic inflammation and immune function.

If there is an imbalance in the gut microbiota, it can increase systemic inflammation, leading to skin problems.

Further, Dr. Prasad Bhate, Head and Consultant, Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Manipal Hospital, Pune explains, “The set of bacteria and other microorganisms that reside in the intestines is the main factor influencing the relationship between gut health and skin health. By maintaining healthy digestion, boosting the immune system and influencing other bodily processes such as skin health, these microorganisms are essential for maintaining overall health.”

Dr Pawan Rawal, head of the gastroenterology department at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, agrees and says that the gut and skin, though appear far apart, have a deep connection.

They are both considered barrier organs, constantly in contact with the external environment. The gut produces hormones and neurotransmitters that affect skin functions such as oil production and inflammation.

It’s also important to understand the gut-brain-skin connection. The gut-brain axis affects stress levels and mood, which can impact skin health. Stress and mental health issues can aggravate skin conditions, making having a healthy gut vital for overall health.

Can your skin reveal secrets?

“Your skin can be a good indicator of what’s happening in your gut,” says Dr Rinky Kapoor, dermatologist at Delhi-based The Aesthetic Clinics.

If your stomach is unhealthy due to your poor eating habits, it can also show on your skin. Serious skin problems like eczema, hives and dermatitis can worsen to a great extent.

An unhealthy gut can lead to various skin problems, including:

  • AcneAn imbalance in gut bacteria can increase inflammation, which is a major cause of acne development.
  • ItchingLong-term inflammation associated with gut dysbiosis may exacerbate eczema symptoms.
  • PsoriasisThere is a link between gut health and psoriasis flare-ups.
  • RosaceaInflammation related to the gut can cause the redness and facial flushing associated with rosacea.
  • premature AgeingChronic inflammation can speed up the skin’s aging process, leading to wrinkles and loss of elasticity.
  • Other skin problemsDigestive problems like bloating and constipation can indirectly affect skin health by depriving the skin of essential nutrients.

A healthy gut can provide significant benefits to the skin:

  • Reduced swellingA balanced gut microbiome helps reduce systemic inflammation, keeping the skin clear and healthy.
  • Fair complexionAs inflammation decreases, acne lessens and skin tone becomes even.
  • Better Nutrient AbsorptionOptimal gut function ensures better absorption of skin-essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D and E, and minerals such as zinc.
  • enhanced skin barrier functionA healthy gut supports the skin’s ability to retain moisture and defend against irritants and germs.
