The film received a UA certificate with 25 cuts and modifications, hours before its scheduled release on 10 January. In an exclusive interview with India Today Digital, Sivakarthikeyan opened up about the last-minute censor approval.

Censor Board asked makers to make changes One dialogue says “Hindi has wiped out my dream” to “My only dream is to oppose the imposition of Hindi.” Similarly, a voiceover about how the imposition of language in other countries led to their disintegration was also modified.

When asked whether this delayed process caused them a loss, Sivakarthikeyan said, “We received the changes at the last minute. After that, we had to make the suggested changes and upload them on QB. Our main focus was to release the film as we were chasing the release date. The censor board acts as per its own rules, and we did not have time to analyze whether it was an advantage or a disadvantage.”

He acknowledged that it was a delayed process and said, “Our entire team was operating like a military camp. We had everyone on standby for 24 hours because it was quite challenging to implement these changes. The more advanced the technology has become, the more difficult it has become in some ways.”

When asked whether the suggested cuts were hampering any creator’s freedom of expression, he said, “If we had more time, we could have explained to them the context of some of the dialogues that they asked us to mute. We were running after the release date, so we made sure that the core of the story remained unaffected while implementing the cuts.”

Sivakarthikeyan said he felt relieved when he received the certificate on January 9. “Thankfully, the cuts weren’t too random; the team was somehow able to match them, making sure they didn’t spoil the experience and delivering the final cut within the 10 hours we had,” he said.
