Famous filmmaker Shyam Benegal was cremated with state honors at Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium in Mumbai. His friends and family attended his funeral.

Actor and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar paid tribute to Shyam Benegal on social media. He wrote, “You defined a movement in Indian cinema and you will never be forgotten as your work and legacy will live forever. Rest in peace sir.”

Vicky Kaushal’s father and stunt choreographer Shyam Kaushal also attended the funeral of Shyam Benegal.

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta was also seen at the funeral of Shyam Benegal in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park.

Actress Dia Mirza shared a throwback picture of Shyam Benegal with Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi when they were attending the Berlin Film Festival. He wrote, “The father of the new wave of Indian cinema may have left his mortal body, but his lifetime’s work is with us. To watch, to learn, to celebrate. Forever. Zoya Akhtar paid her last tribute to Shyam Benegal on social media. Sharing an old picture, she wrote, “The OG. Mr. Benegal. Cannes 1976 with his film Nishant. With him were the two leading ladies he introduced on screen, Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi. RIP Sir thank you for The New Wave. Thanks for the movies.”

Actors Boman Irani, Nandita Das, producer Ronnie Screwvala were seen arriving for the funeral of Shyam Benegal.

Actor Naseeruddin Shah, his wife Ratna Pathak Shah and son Vivaan Shah attended the funeral of director Shyam Benegal. Naseer has worked in many of Benegal’s films including Manthan, Mandi, Nishant and Trikaal.

Filmmaker Ashok Pandit and Ila Arun’s daughter, actor Ishita Arun was also at the crematorium to attend the last rites of Shyam Benegal.

On Tuesday, December 24, the entire film fraternity gathered at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium to bid farewell to famous filmmaker Shyam Benegal. These names include Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Divya Dutta, Anang Desai, Atul Tiwari and Rajit Kapoor among others.
