Margot Robbie enthralled everyone with her portrayal of DC villain and Joker’s partner-in-crime Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and The Suicide Squad (2021). However, Lady Gaga played the iconic role in the film Joker: Folie à Deux starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips.
In a previous interview with Variety on the 2024 Golden Globes red carpet, the Barbie actress reacted to the Poker Face singer reprising one of her famous roles. “Oh my God, she’s going to crush it. Are you kidding? She’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait to see it,” she said at the time.
When asked if he had talked to Gaga about the character they now share, Robbie said the two stars haven’t had a chance to interact. “I haven’t actually talked to him about it,” the Wolf of Wall Street actress said. She said, “I don’t want to know at all, so I can save it as a surprise for when I get to see the film.” In another interview with MTV News in October 2022, Robbie shared his opinion on the Oscar-winning singer reprising her role.
She said she was “happy” to see other actresses bringing their version of her character to the big screen. Robbie said that she always wanted Harley to be one of those characters, like Batman or Macbeth, that changed from actor to actor. He said at the time, “It’s an honor to build such a strong foundation that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get a chance to play.” He also said that Gaga’s character would be “incredible”.
The sequel to the blockbuster 2019 Joker film released in theaters on October 4 and opened with tremendous collections. However, Phoenix’s acting skills have earned him praise and admiration from critics. Picking up where the first film left off, it follows the murder trial of Arthur Fleck, aka Joker (Phoenix).
The villain, now residing in Arkham Asylum, meets Lee aka Harley Quinn inside the prison, and their friendship soon turns into a passionate romance. The official synopsis reads, “Struggling with his dual identity, failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital.”
