Denzel Washington reminisced about his days working with Whitney Houston. In the 1996 film The Preacher’s Wife, Washington and the late versatile star played Dudley and Julia Biggs, respectively. Washington reflected on his decades-long career and shared his experience making the classic film with Houston thirty years later.

According to People, Washington said, “I always felt like I wanted to protect her. You know? She wanted to be so tough, but she really wasn’t. That’s it. It’s OK.”
Penny Marshall directed The Preacher’s Wife, which also starred Courtney B. Vance, Gregory Hines, Jenifer Lewis and Justin Pierre Edmond. Loretta Devine, Lionel Richie and Houston’s mother Cissy Houston played important roles. The film is an adaptation of the 1947 motion picture The Bishop’s Wife.
Whitney Houston forged a close relationship with the cast before her unexpected death in February 2012 at age 48. Houston’s death was attributed to accidental drowning, with complications including heart disease and cocaine use.
In November, Courtney B. Vance, who played Houston’s husband, the Reverend Henry Biggs, in the film, spoke to People about the impact Houston had on his career. “I loved her so much. Playing her husband was a very fulfilling experience for me,” he said.
