Shawn Mendes shares insight into making one of the best but hardest decisions of his life. In a conversation with Jai Shetty on his podcast, On Purpose with Jai Shetty, the musician explained the reason behind the cancellation of his 2022 tour concert, Wonder: The World Tour.
The Imagination singer revealed he struggled with depression and anxiety during his tour dates and went through a difficult time in his life, which ultimately led him to cancel the concerts.
On a recent episode of the podcast, Mendes said he went through “general darkness or meanness” and that it was worse than what people saw of him on the outside.
The Senorita singer also mentioned that he has gone through tough times and still performed in concerts and tours, but this was different.
Further in conversation with Shetty, the singer shared, “When things were getting tough, I had nowhere to go, you know? I didn’t have other aspects of life that I felt connected to, that I could lean on them to take a little break from touring and come back and find balance.” The Treat You Better singer continued, “And I knew there was only one way to do that. And it was just like creating a life.”

Mendes further revealed that canceling the tour was one of the hardest decisions to make, yet it was a great decision because it gave him time to focus on his mental health. Focusing on the tough part, the singer said that the cancellation of his tour affected hundreds of people including his fans, staff members and crew.
He said, “It was like, ‘Oh man, people were excited,’ you know? People were proud of what they created, and that was the hard part.”
Before announcing the cancellation of the tour, Mendes tried to postpone the dates several times and then ultimately announced, “It’s become more and more clear that I need that time to reinvent myself and come back stronger. There is a need to take something that I personally never took.”
Meanwhile, the singer recently returned to the stage and performed for the crowd to promote his fourth studio album, which is set to be released on October 18.
