There is no point in feeling tired, and even if I do, they are my children – they will understand. Tomorrow when they grow up, they will know.”

He said he never wanted his children to be limited by his status or achievements. “I don’t think it’s right to burden children with their parents’ dreams. People should have their own identity and not just be ‘someone’s son’.” I strongly believe that many Indian men could not excel because they were burdened by their father’s expectations.”

Shahid gave the credit for this to his wife Mira Rajput To help him maintain a healthy emotional balance. “Mira is very supportive. She understands most things about me and has made a rule that when we are at home, we don’t discuss work. It’s very rare that we talk about films.” His clarity, he said, ensures that he remains present as a husband and father.

Acting took an unexpected turn when he accompanied a friend to an audition. He said, “I went to an audition with a friend and the ad makers liked me. They made me audition and I got a Pepsi commercial with Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee. That opened doors and started getting work. Nothing was planned.”

Addressing notions of nepotism, Shahid clarified that his father’s name played no role in his early career. “People think I’m an actor because I’m Pankaj Kapur’s son, but my parents separated when I was just three years old. I didn’t spend much time with my father, so no one knew I was his son, nor did I ever use his name.”

He further added, “I lived with my mother. Things went well for me. I never asked my father for help and he never called me to get me work.”
