Shabana Azmi reminisces about the clothes she wore during film shoots
Senior actress Shabana Azmi spoke to Hindustan Times on the rising cost of film shooting. She said that unlike in the West, Indian producers have very little say in who should be in an actor’s team.
She said, “In Hollywood, I have never seen anything like this except for personal trainers. The chief dress designer, hairdresser and makeup artist are all appointed by the producer’s team.” The National Award-winning actress further revealed that during the 1970s and 1980s, she had a team of only three members which included a hairdresser, a makeup artist and a driver.
However, there was no one to assist her in low-budget films. “I used to wear my own clothes, take help from the unit’s hair and makeup person and always stayed in the unit’s hotel,” the 73-year-old actress recalled.
Furthermore, Azmi went back to the time when she shot for the 1983 film Mandi. Sharing her experience of working with Smita Patil, she said that even though they were given separate trains, the actors decided to leave her and travel in the bus with the other actors as they were having fun singing and playing silly games. She also bought an air ticket for her director when she got to know that he was travelling by train.

Shabana Azmi has been a part of many hit films like Ankur, Swami, Arth, Khandhar, Paar. In 2023, she will be seen in Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani opposite Dharmendra and in R. Balki’s sports drama film Ghoomar alongside Abhishek Bachchan, Saiyami Kher and Angad Bedi.
