Veteran Bollywood actress Shabana Azmi recently expressed her deep anguish over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. She expressed disappointment that rape cases have not decreased despite the formation of Justice Verma Committee in 2012 after the Nirbhaya case.

“Such incidents are extremely dangerous. It is shameful to see that despite the formation of the Justice Verma Committee in 2012 during the Nirbhaya case, such heinous crimes have not decreased,” 73-year-old Shabana told the news agency. ANI At an event in Pune.

Shabana said, “We should not treat women as objects…we need to end patriarchy which is deeply rooted in us.”

Early on Wednesday, August 28, President Draupadi Murmu also expressed dismay at the rising number of rape cases in the country. She said she was “horrified” and strongly rejected those who consider women “less powerful, less capable, less intelligent.”

“Those who hold such views go a step further and look at women as objects… We owe it to our daughters to remove the obstacles that come in their way to free themselves from fear,” Murmu told news agency PTI. “The country is naturally outraged, and so am I. While students, doctors and citizens were protesting in Kolkata, the perpetrators were still roaming around in other places. The victims include kindergarten girls.”

For those who know, a 31-year-old intern doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital on August 9. The crime sparked outrage across Kolkata and protests demanding swift action against the accused and the death penalty.
