Selena Gomez opened up about the Puerto Rican joke the comedian made at Donald Trump’s election rally. The actress addressed the issue while speaking to Variety at the opening night of the American French Film Festival, where Gomez was in attendance for the premiere of her upcoming film Emilia Perez.
The Wizards of Waverly Place actress shared that she completely disagrees with the comments made on a community and claimed that she will stand by her people amid the controversial statements.
Speaking to the media portal, the Love On singer said that he “completely disagrees with any of the comments made recently.” This joke was told by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, which caused a wave of anger among the people of the island.
“I definitely want to stand with my people,” the Only Murders in the Building star added. She further told the entertainment outlet that she herself shared a mail-dropping post this week because “people can sometimes forget that one vote can change everything.”

Gomez is one of several celebrities who expressed their objection to Hinchcliffe’s statements, saying, “There’s a lot going on. I don’t know if you know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of It’s the ocean now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
The comedian further said on his program that Latinos “love having kids.” He also said, “No one is moving out. They don’t do it like they did in our country.” The jokes also included several racist comments about black and Jewish people.
Apart from Gomez, Nicky Jam also clapped back at the comedian and withdrew her support for Donald Trump. “I never thought in my life that a month later there would be a comedian who would criticize my country and say bad things about my country,” Jaime said in a statement on Wednesday. “And for that, I withdraw my support from Donald Trump,” he said. “Puerto Rico must be respected.”
Meanwhile, on the work front, Selena Gomez has returned as Alex Russo in the reboot of the Disney show, Wizards of Waverly Place.
