In the film, Diljit Dosanjh plays the role of late human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, who investigated the cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab between 1984 and 1994. The subject matter has made the film one of the most talked about and controversial projects in recent years, with its release also being delayed for a long time.

Diljit also reacted to the film’s removal by taking a philosophical approach by comparing the Chhaya ban to Khalra’s disappearance and murder.

In real life, Khalra disappeared in 1995 after exposing alleged illegal cremation of unidentified bodies in Punjab. In 2005, four Punjab Police personnel were convicted of her kidnapping and murder and sentenced to seven years in prison. Later the Punjab and Haryana High Court increased his sentence to life imprisonment.
