Introduction
It’s already the end of July, and in keeping with the annual tradition, Samsung has introduced its latest series of foldables. The big innovation this year is the inclusion of a brand new foldable form factor. We’re not sure if the industry has settled on a clean and concise name for it yet, but that’s what this book-style foldable with a 4:3 inner display is called.
You’ve probably already heard it in some shape or form, but Samsung has decided that instead of creating a new name for this new foldable form factor, it’s going to go the admittedly confusing route of naming the Galaxy Z Fold8. So, if you’re looking for a successor to the Z Fold7, that would actually be the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. Confusing? Perhaps. Really a big deal? Well, probably not. We can’t imagine that many potential buyers of any device would actually accidentally get the wrong thing. I would probably make our lives a little harder when discussing models in a historical context, but that’s hardly an issue worth considering.
As far as flips go – it’s all fine and safe. It’s still called the Flip, currently the Flip8, and there’s no FE model this time. There have been no major hardware advancements other than the move to the Exynos 2600 used in the Galaxy S26. The phone is also a little thinner now.
Samsung’s foldables are still occupying this weird transitional time of year, being close enough to the tail end of the current flagship chipset lifecycle, that it rubs some people the wrong way. We got it. It almost feels like you’re spending a large sum of money to get hardware that will soon be replaced. But in our opinion this is quite a harsh way of looking at things. Yes, this new generation of Galaxy foldables is based on Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Samsung Exynos 2600. But both will remain excellent chips in a few months when they are finally “replaced”.
That said, there are still some improvements to be considered in each of the two returning models. Also, this year will see a brand new Galaxy Z Fold8. So, let’s look at our initial impressions.
