In hand, the Galaxy Z Fold8 feels like a novelty. We’ve become accustomed to long and narrow foldables, and this one is quite the opposite. The first impression from many of our editors here at headquarters was positive. Maybe it’s the fact that many of us carry around a bulky ultra cameraphone on a daily basis, maybe it’s the Fold8’s mere 201g weight, but we love having a phone in our hands.

It certainly looks more interesting than the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, but that’s normal; It’s a new style of device, while the Fold8 Ultra is a slight improvement over last year’s Z Fold7.

Something that makes the squat and smaller Galaxy Z Fold8 interesting is the fact that it doesn’t feel like it gives you less screen to work with. It’s a compact phone when closed, but it feels just as versatile when open if you want a larger canvas for your content.

The Galaxy Z Fold8 displays a smaller website view, but actually outperforms the larger Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra when watching standard 16:9 aspect video. The smaller foldable is also naturally better at looking back at photos from your smartphone, since they’re 4:3, which is the same aspect ratio as its internal screen.
