Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: What we know so far

0

With the Galaxy S lineup now surpassing its predecessors, Samsung has big ambitions for its 2024 foldables – the Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6.

All the rumours suggest that we’re expecting the biggest change in the lineup yet, and the book-style foldable will be the highlight. So here’s what we know so far.

It will be launched in July

Samsung will launch the Galaxy Z Fold6 on July 10 alongside the Galaxy Z Flip6, the new Galaxy Watch7 series, and the new Galaxy Ring.

This trend continues with Samsung’s previous Galaxy foldable releases — the Galaxy Z Fold4 arrived in late August, while the Z Fold5 arrived in early August.

New Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6

The Galaxy Z Fold6 is shaping up to be a minor upgrade. It looks similar to its predecessor, although it may have a slightly adjusted screen aspect ratio and be thinner and lighter.

We expect a jump to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for the Galaxy and we expect this to be the chipset on all Galaxy Z Fold6s worldwide. Battery capacity could also increase.

The Galaxy Z Fold6 will likely feature the same camera setup as the Galaxy Z Fold5. This means a 50 MP 1/1.56″ ISOCELL GN3 wide-angle camera accompanied by a 10 MP 1/3.94″ 3x zoom and a 12 MP 1/3.06″ ultrawide shooter. A 10 MP 1/3″ punch hole selfie and a 16MP 1/3″ under-display selfie camera complete the list.

The Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra isn’t coming just yet

For the first time, Samsung will split the Galaxy Z Fold series in two. For a while it was unclear whether we would get a regular Fold and a cheaper Fold, or a Fold and a Fold Ultra but it’s now clear that a higher-end Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra is coming, however, it’s more likely to arrive alongside the Galaxy S25 in early 2025.

The most reliable reports suggest a thinner and lighter Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra with an improved camera setup. The Ultra is likely to get the 24MP ISOCELL HP200 camera from the Galaxy S2 Ultra, but no information has been given about the rest of the camera setup.

Other rumors point to a thinner and lighter Galaxy Z Fold6 Ultra. It will reportedly weigh 239 grams, which is much less than the Fold5’s 253 grams. Apart from this, the Ultra may use titanium like the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The Ultra Fold will be just 5.6mm thick when opened and 12.1mm thick when folded – compared to the current Fold5 which is 6.1mm and 13.4mm thick.

The cheaper Galaxy Z Fold6 isn’t coming

For some time now, we’ve been hearing rumors about a Galaxy Z Fold6 FE that would be significantly cheaper than the current Z Fold5. But that’s unlikely to happen.

New design with thinner frames and wider cover display

Samsung changes the design of the Galaxy Z Fold a little bit every year, but it’s been very conservative and has lagged behind the competition lately. Last year, we got a flat-closing phone with a very slight increase in aspect ratio.

This year, we’re hearing about even bigger changes. We’ve already reported on thinner frames, which would be perfect for the 11mm folded Galaxy Z Fold6.

Early renders suggested a device nearly identical to the Galaxy Z Fold5, but with flat, sharp edges.

A flat, square design

Those renders also came with dimensions – 153.5 x 132.5 x 6.1mm. This is a few mm different from the other, more recent report of a 5.6mm unfolded thickness. The CAD render brings back the 6.1mm profile, but this could be a difference in the model – Z Fold6 vs Z Fold6 Ultra.

The same report says the cover display will be a little more traditional – it’ll be a 6.3″ 22:9 unit, compared to the Fold5’s 6.2″ 23.1:9 unit. The internal display is expected to retain the 7.6″ diagonal.
