Introduction

If it works, don’t touch it – that’s probably what the Galaxy Z Fold6 development team had written in big letters on the whiteboard when they gathered to lay out the concept for Samsung’s latest big foldable. In reality, the Fold5 was as close to an everyman’s phone-turned-tablet device as anything else on the market, and there wasn’t much incentive for disruptive changes on the new one.

The Z Fold6 comes with slight changes in the ratio of both displays, reduced weight, and now Evaluation Protection from solids (but not the thinnest of them). After a year, a mandatory chipset upgrade is also on the list of changes.

What hasn’t changed is any of the camera bits. Samsung didn’t even bother to improve this area last year, so the 6’s cameras are the same as the 4’s. Sure, it had a decently capable triple setup at the back and the under-display selfie camera is a sensible compromise, but other manufacturers are offering close-focus telephotos and big-sensor ultrawides (with AF) – not Samsung.

It’s also getting tiresome to protest every year about Samsung’s continued refusal to implement some sort of sensible charging solution – let’s see what the 25W spec will mean for top-up speeds this time around, but we’re not expecting miracles. Battery capacity is also the same as last year, and that’s not necessarily a good thing.

Of course, it’s hard to complain about the feature-rich One UI software package, and it makes the Fold6 a great option if you want tablet functionality in your pocket. The S Pen support is another great feature that’s hard to beat. There’s little room for improvement here, isn’t there. Oh, there’s Galaxy AI now, isn’t there.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 Unboxing

Gone are the days of fancy retail packaging in the Galaxy Z lineup. The Z Fold6 comes in the usual plain black cardboard box with nothing inside other than the phone.

You get a bunch of the usual paperwork, but as for items of any practical use, the list is limited to just a USB-C cable and a SIM ejection pin. Some pre-order deals or some carrier bundles might include a charger, but we wouldn’t count on it.
