He made a strong statement in his acceptance speech, celebrating the roots of his immigrants. A blind emotional Saladana talked about being a ‘proud child of immigrant parents’ because she won her first Oscar.

Accepting his award at Dolby Theater in Hollywood, he was taken into tears. “I am proud of immigrant parents, with dreams and dignity and hardworking hands. And I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last,” she said.
