Rest in peace, Asha Tai: Iconic singer cremated with full state honors in Mumbai

Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Mumbai to bid final farewell to Asha Bhosle. The great singer was cremated at the Shivaji Park crematorium.

Famous singer Asha Bhosle was cremated with full state honors in Mumbai on Monday, as political leaders, family members and thousands of fans gathered to bid her last farewell.

Bhosale died on Sunday at the age of 92 due to multi organ failure at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. His last rites took place at the Shivaji Park cremation ground, where his son Anand Bhosle lit the pyre and performed the last rites in a solemn atmosphere.

A defining voice in Indian music for over seven decades, Bhosle was known for his versatility and unforgettable songs. On Monday, thousands of his fans joined the funeral procession when his body was brought from his residence in Lower Parel to the crematorium, where Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid his last respects.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC and former Union minister Sushil Kumar Shinde were also present. Bollywood celebrities Aamir Khan, Vicky Kaushal, Ramesh Sippy, Riteish Deshmukh and Vivek Oberoi and cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammed Shiraz were also there to bid farewell to the singer.

Asha Bhosle, fondly known as Asha Tai, was honored with several prestigious awards including the Padma Vibhushan and Maharashtra Bhushan, India’s second highest civilian honour, for her immense contribution to Indian music.
