Regarding her identity after motherhood, Eva Mendes asked herself, “When the children are able to survive on their own, who am I now?”

Ever since Eva Mendes turned the limelight over to family life, the former Hollywood actress has immersed herself in the role of raising her children, making fashion moves and being a supportive partner. The 50-year-old celebrity last acted in films in the late 2010s and has since dedicated herself to being Ryan Gosling’s second wife and mother to their two daughters, Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee. Although motherhood has come naturally to Eva, she also faced challenges in finding her identity as a person after becoming a mother.

Eva was the latest guest on Drew Barrymore’s talk show, where she opened up about the struggles of motherhood and raising children. On the topic of becoming a mother, Drew explained how she felt when she gave birth because she found it difficult to “do that thing and be like other people”. To this, Eva responded, “I felt very clear and then I felt very lost, if that makes any sense. Then it became this cliché of ‘when the kids can survive on their own who am I now’. They’re only 8 and 10, but they don’t need me every second, it’s a little different.”

Eva recently became an author when she released a book for children titled Desi, Mami and never-ending worrieswhich revolves around a mother guiding her daughter to take control of her thoughts, rather than letting scary thoughts take over her. Drew said about the book, “I love your book because it speaks so much to the work I need to do in my life because I’m about to turn 50. I don’t want to live with thoughts in my head anymore. It’s the most deep, beautiful book.”
