Tu, a student at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, was returning home from the gym on March 24, 2026, when he saw flames and thick smoke rising from a six-story residential building in the Linh Nam area. What followed was a series of decisions taken in the moment, which saved many lives, as he entered the burning structure without protective gear, relying on instinct, courage and presence of mind.

Visibility reduced rapidly, leaving many residents trapped inside with no way out.Smoke is the greatest danger, as it can disorient occupants and cause respiratory failure within minutes. With no immediate access to a safe exit, the people inside were in grave danger.Recognizing the danger of entering through the main access points, Tu climbed onto the roof to find an alternative entrance. After finding an open space, he forced his way inside and into the smoke-filled interior.To cope with the conditions, he used a water-soaked shirt as a makeshift breathing filter, allowing him to stay inside for longer periods of time.
