Akshaye Khanna, on the other hand, mostly kept to himself as he was completely engrossed in his character.” Interestingly, Kaushik said that the on-screen dynamics between the characters mirrored real life. “The whole gang used to sit together, laughing and talking, while Rehman Dakti used to sit separately. It was exactly like that during the entire shoot.”
Kaushik also addressed the long-standing perception that Akshaye Khanna is difficult to contact. According to him the reality was completely different. “Whenever we would go to talk to him, he would talk very warmly and lovingly. But once the conversation was over, he would silently return to his place and we would go back to our place,” he said. Kaushik said he was not sure whether Khanna was acting methodically, but like his character Rehman the dacoit – silent, observant and unpredictable – Akshay remained focused and away from the noise of the set, completely invested in his role.
Talking about Ranveer Singh’s character of Hamza, Kaushik said that the role was completely opposite to the actor’s real-life personality. He said, “Hamza and Ranveer are not alike. Ranveer is a powerhouse of energy like thousands of volts of electricity. As soon as he came on the set, he would welcome everyone.”
“He doesn’t like anyone sitting idle. These two characters, Hamza and Rehman, are completely different from each other. Every time the director would say ‘cut’, Ranveer would immediately come back to himself, unless it was a very serious scene. He is child-like and curious the whole time. He doesn’t show that ‘I’m a big star’ attitude or ego.”
