Ranbir Kapoor accepts animal criticism, talks about creativity and responsible cinema
Actor Ranbir Kapoor answered a question about starring in a violent film like Animal and asked whether actors should make responsible choices in cinema. He was speaking during a special session at IFFI Goa.
Actor Ranbir Kapoor addressed the criticism over the glorification of violence in his last film Animal. He stressed the importance of social responsibility as an artist, but also mentioned how he would like to work across different genres. The actor was speaking at the centenary celebrations of Raj Kapoor at the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. When an attendee mentioned how contemporary cinema today glorifies violence, something that was not the trend in his grandfather’s era, Ranbir acknowledged it and offered an explanation. He was also asked about the responsibility of artists, as cinema is known to influence the society.
The 42-year-old actor said, “I completely agree with your opinion. As actors, it is our responsibility to bring films that have a positive impact on the society.” Additionally, he also said that the actor is also willing to venture into unused genres and characters.
“As an actor, it’s important for me to try my hand at different genres and characters and play different roles,” he said, highlighting how there needs to be a balance with regard to creative freedom and responsible cinema.
While interacting with veteran filmmaker Rahul Rawail on stage, he also admitted that he is mulling over the idea of working on a biography of Raj Kapoor. Ranbir said, “I have thought about it a lot. I have talked to many people about it, I have talked to different filmmakers, Mr. Bhansali, about how to make a film on the life of Mr. Raj Kapoor.” ,
However, he mentioned that the idea is difficult to execute as it would require honest performance, and the ups and downs of his grandfather’s life, which his family would not like.
“You see, a biopic is not something where you just highlight the success factors or highs in a person’s life, you have to actually portray someone’s life honestly, show the shortcomings, the struggles and The dynamics of the relationship have to be shown. Most of these things, I don’t know whether my family will agree to show this side of Mr. Raj Kapoor, but I definitely think it will make a great film.”
On the occasion of Raj Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary, Ranbir announced a special film festival on the same platform, where restored films of the renowned filmmaker will be re-released across the country.
