OnePlus is preparing to launch its next affordable flagship OnePlus 15R in India soon. Ahead of the release of the device, the company has confirmed that the 15R will be the first device globally to launch with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset. With less than a month to go until the OnePlus 15R launches, here’s everything you need to know to get up to speed.

The OnePlus R series is known for delivering good performance without breaking the bank. The OnePlus 15R takes things a step further with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC. This processor is part of Qualcomm’s flagship 8 series and sits just below the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the OnePlus 15.

OnePlus claims that the new chipset brings a 36% increase in CPU performance compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, along with an 11% increase in GPU performance and up to 46% improvement in AI performance. This makes the OnePlus 15R a significantly more powerful device than the OnePlus 13R, which was powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

In a press release, OnePlus India CEO Robin Liu emphasized the close collaboration between OnePlus and Qualcomm to bring the chipset to the OnePlus 15R. He said, “We have worked closely with Qualcomm to ensure that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 mobile platform is optimized for our users, and I am excited to see how our users take to the OnePlus 15R when it launches later this year.”

What is Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5?

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is considered a ‘flagship killer’ by Qualcomm. The processor is built on a 3nm process like the more powerful 8 Elite Gen 5. Yes, so this year, Qualcomm has launched two 8 series chipsets – the flagship 8 Elite Gen 5, and the less expensive 8 Gen 5. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 aims to bring flagship performance at a more affordable price.

The new chipset gets the same chopped Adreno 840 GPU with Frame Motion Engine 3.0 as on the 8 Elite Gen 5, but without the Adreno high-performance memory (HPM). The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 also uses the same X80 5G modem-RF system as last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite.

OnePlus 15R launch and expected specs

OnePlus 15R will launch in India on December 17 along with OnePlus Pad Go 2. The 15R will come in two colors – Charcoal Black and Mint Breeze. Like the OnePlus 15, the OnePlus 15R will also get IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings for dust and water resistance.

According to reports, the OnePlus 15R is likely a rebranded version of the OnePlus Ace 6T. If this is true, then the device is likely to feature a 6.7-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a 165Hz refresh rate and a large 8,000mAh battery. The 15R is also expected to come with a dual camera setup.
