Punjab IELTS centre involved in murder of Indian woman in New Jersey
An Indian-origin man opened fire in New Jersey, killing an Indian woman and injuring another. The cross-continent shooting incident began at an IELTS centre in Nakodar, Punjab.

Gunshots rang out in Carteret, New Jersey, and two Indian women fell to the ground. The attacker was a man of Indian origin and the source of the attack was Nakodar, a small town in Punjab. One woman died of bullet injuries, while the other is battling between life and death,
The attack in the US on Wednesday is being traced to the IELTS centre in Nakodar, Punjab, across continents and a distance of 11,500 flights.
Nineteen-year-old Gaurav Gill shot Jasveer Kaur, 29, and Gagandeep Kaur, 20, from Punjab.
Jasvir died of bullet injuries, while Gagandeep is fighting for her life at University Hospital Newark. Her condition is said to be critical.
At an IELTS centre in Punjab, which trains people who want to go abroad to study in English, Gaurav met Gagandeep.
According to a Times of India report, they knew each other and studied together at an IELTS coaching centre in Nakodar.
The deceased Jasveer Kaur was a resident of Gorsian near Nurmahal town in Punjab and was hosting her cousin Gagandeep at her home when the shootout took place on Wednesday morning.
Gagandeep, who was studying in the US on a visa, had recently told Jasbir about the difficulties she was facing in her studies.
According to Jasveer’s father Kewal Singh, Jasveer was sleeping when the accused Gill approached Gagandeep outside the house. There was an argument between the two and when Jasveer intervened, the accused fired seven bullets at him, killing him.
Both Gagandeep and accused Gill had gone to the US at almost the same time.
Gagandeep’s mother Surjit Kaur said she was not aware of any controversy involving Gill or her daughter.
Gagandeep’s father, who comes from an agricultural background, also drove a school bus to support the family and managed to send his daughter to study in the US.
According to US media reports, Jasvir was married and reportedly worked at an Amazon factory in Carteret, while her husband worked as a truck driver and lived out of town.
Gill was arrested six hours later in a backyard about a half-mile from the shooting scene. He was living in Kent, Washington, and faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder and weapons offenses.
Gill appeared before a judge in Middlesex County Court on Thursday. According to News12 New Jersey, his first court appearance was brief, taking place at the Middlesex County Jail before Judge Gary Price.
Gill is due back in court on Tuesday for a custody hearing.
Authorities have not given a motive for the shooting or clarified any connection between Gill and the victims.
