According to reports, the violence started with the Barmang Bridge firing. The dossier claims that the Pakistani military targeted the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a group that campaigns for economic reforms, and banned it under anti-terrorism laws. It is further alleged that tension has increased after the murder of JAAC leader Shahzeb Habib. While official figures put the death toll at 11, the dossier claims that those killed during this period included 19 children and seven pregnant women. The report also alleged that Pakistan deployed about 14,000 troops from the mainland, imposed a complete communications blackout and used live ammunition against unarmed mourners and civilian convoys. The development comes days after at least 50 British MPs wrote to the UK government urging its intervention, raising concerns about Pakistan’s “barbaric” actions against Kashmiri protesters and human rights violations.PoK authorities have also ordered treason proceedings against two JAAC leaders.Violence broke out in Mirpur division of PoK when protesters from several areas including Bhimber and Kotli districts gathered to march towards Muzaffarabad.
