A Sharjah Police emergency call operator helped rescue an expatriate woman after he realized her repeated requests to “order pizza” were a coded appeal for help, while she was being threatened at home. The incident was revealed by Captain Majid Al Bass, Head of Communications Operations Branch at Sharjah Police, during the “Aman Ya Biladi” program broadcast on Sharjah Radio in collaboration with Sharjah Broadcasting Authority.According to Captain Al Bass, the woman contacted the police emergency center but was repeatedly asked to order pizza, despite being told that she had reached out to police, not the restaurant.Recognizing that something was wrong, the duty officer, identified as Khamis, continued the conversation instead of ending the call. Suspecting that the caller was unable to talk openly, he used the pizza order to gather information while keeping her calm and connected. The officer assessed the situation inside the house using questions like how many pizzas he wanted and what drinks he wanted. The caller’s response that she wanted a pizza helps signal that only one other person was present. While maintaining the call, Khamis alerted his supervisor and began the location-finding process. Police were able to identify the woman’s location within Sharjah and immediately dispatched patrol units to the address.Officers who reached the scene found that the woman was allegedly being threatened by her husband, who was reported to be in an abnormal condition. Police secured the location and ensured the safety of the woman.Captain Al Bass said the incident highlighted the importance of specialized training for emergency call operators, particularly in recognizing coded requests for help from people who may be unable to speak openly. He said disguised emergency messages are an internationally recognized method used by victims to seek help without alerting the person posing a threat. Sharjah Police personnel receive training to identify subtle behavioral and verbal cues that may indicate someone is in danger, he said.
