A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, just a week after a powerful earthquake struck the same region, killing at least 65 people and leaving dozens missing.According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao island at 5:18 pm local time (0918 GMT) at a depth of 112 kilometers. No tsunami warning was issued. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or major damage.“Our priority now is to monitor the coast to determine if there are signs that the waters have receded (warning of an impending tsunami),” Cáceres Cadiz of the Davao Oriental provincial disaster office told AFP. He said that no such indication has been seen. The latest quake follows a devastating 7.8-magnitude quake that hit Mindanao on Monday, June 8, which collapsed buildings, triggered landslides and displaced thousands of people in the southern Philippines.Early last week, the national disaster agency raised the death toll from that quake to 65, while at least 36 people are missing. The powerful tremor injured more than 630 people and damaged roads, bridges and government buildings as well as more than 3,100 homes. It also forced the closure of General Santos International Airport and disrupted classes in several provinces. Most of the deaths were caused by collapse of structures and landslides in General Santos and surrounding provinces including Sarangani, South Cotabato and Davao Occidental. More than 2,100 aftershocks have occurred since the June 8 earthquake, including several above magnitude 6.The Philippines is frequently hit by earthquakes because it lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast region of seismic and volcanic activity stretching from Japan to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Ocean. Eastern Mindanao was also hit by earthquakes of magnitude 7.4 and 6.7 in October last year, killing at least eight people.
