Payal Kapadia calls Missing Ladies’ Oscar nomination ‘a wise choice’
Filmmaker Payal Kapadia reacts to the news of Lapata Ladies being nominated for the 2025 Oscars and her own film, All We Imagine as Light being taken out of the race.
Filmmaker Payal Kapadia recently discussed her reaction to Kiran Rao’s Lapata Ladies being selected as India’s official entry for Oscars 2025 instead of her film All We Imagine as Light. In a recent interview, he discussed the importance of awards for films and shared his opinion on rumors of Aamir Khan having the financial power to lobby in Hollywood.
Payal expressed happiness over the missing ladies nomination. talking to Hindustan TimesThe Indian director said, “It’s okay. It’s part of life. And actually, I love Missing Ladies.”
Referring to All We Imagine as Light, Payal said, “I have already got a lot from this film. It took me a lot of time to make it. I had no personal money to make this film. I only Have paid attention to the grant.” ‘Raising the money and taking five years to make it, it’s a big thing for me that the film got made, it was shown in such a big festival (Cannes 2024).’
Addressing rumors that Aamir Khan’s financial support may have influenced Lapata Ladies’ Oscar nomination, Payal said, “It matters in the Oscar race, so in a way, it (Lapata Ladies) is a Smart choice because the Oscars are like a lobby. And I’m learning all this new stuff. I never used to watch the Oscars so closely, of course, when the Oscars come on and you’re watching it on TV. You get excited about it, but I’m still learning what it actually means and what goes into it.”
She added, “I was thinking it was a completely different ball game. So, in a way, it’s great to have financial backing, and it takes a film much further than when you have There is no money to do it. It was very random for my film to be short-listed in France as a possible submission for the Oscars.”
Missing Ladies stars Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goyal, Ravi Kishan and Sparsh Srivastava in important roles.
