The Saudi military has deployed more than 1,600 personnel and 30 rapid response teams along with medical units to care for heatstroke victims, CNN reports. In addition, 5,000 health and first aid volunteers have also been deployed.

Only 240 pilgrims were reported dead last year, most of them Indonesians.

On Monday, the National Meteorological Center recorded a maximum temperature of 51.8 degrees Celsius at Mecca’s Grand Mosque. Studies have shown that temperatures in the region are rising by 0.4 degrees Celsius every decade.
