Oppo explains how and why it designed the first 50MP 10x camera for the Find X9 Ultra

Oppo has packed so much tech into the Find X9 Ultra that it would take several presentations to cover everything. So, the company is getting a head start ahead of tomorrow’s unveiling with this detailed description of the quad camera system.

First of all, Oppo focuses on 10x optical zoom (230mm). It says previous devices have attempted this without naming names, but says cramming this focal length into a phone came at the cost of “severely limited light intake and low pixel count.”

So, Oppo developed the world’s first 10x 50MP smartphone camera. It designed a quintuple prism lens, which is only 29 mm long – a single prism design would have been 41 mm long. It’s a complex design that requires active optical alignment during assembly – this process uses high-precision cameras to calibrate the lens, sensors, and prisms at the factory.

However, it is worth it. The end result is a bright f/3.5 lens that captures three times more light than the previous 10x telephoto lens. Then there’s the optimized Samsung JNL sensor, which has sensor shift stabilization – stabilization is important when shooting at 10x and 20x. Since the ZNL sensor has 50MP resolution, it can use in-sensor zoom to reach up to 20x.

Oppo Find X9 Ultra has two 200MP cameras. The main module uses the largest 200MP sensor ever, the 1/1.12″ Sony Lytia 901. It’s paired with an f/1.5 lens and Oppo says the light gathering ability is on par with 1″-type cameras. The in-sensor 2x zoom provides close to 50MP resolution at a 50mm focal length.

The 3x telephoto module uses a 1/1.28″ sensor and f/2.2 lens. It also sports a 2x in-sensor zoom at 50MP, allowing it to match the 6x 50MP camera of the older Find

Then there’s the 50MP ultra-wide camera with a 14mm lens and a wide aperture that allows it to capture 56% more light than the previous generation UW camera.

Finally, the new generation True Color camera is a multispectral sensor with a 95° field of view and 5.5x greater dynamic range. This module helps other cameras to render colors more accurately.

Hasselblad Earth Explorer Kit for Oppo Find X9 Ultra

To zoom even further, Oppo has created the Hasselblad Earth Explorer Kit. This includes the Explorer Case, which borrows its design cues from the Hasselblad X2D 100C Earth Explorer Edition. This case allows you to mount a 67mm filter or a new teleconverter. Speaking of which, the Hasselblad 300mm Explorer Teleconverter has 16 glass elements arranged in 11 groups. Together, they add a magnification factor of 4.3x on top of the 200MP 3x camera – that’s 300mm or 13x optical zoom. The in-sensor zoom can increase this to 690mm or 30x.
