Hindi film industry’s biggest blockbusters, Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar: The Revenge, starring Ranveer Singh in the lead role, delivered historic performances at the box office. Directed by Aditya Dhar, both films sparked major conversations about how their success could change the filmmaking genre in Hindi cinema. A big question that arises is whether Dhurandhar’s dominance at the box office is a boon that is saving Bollywood or a curse that is silencing the competition.
In my opinion, tentpole films like Dhurandhar are a matter of pride for the industry. These films attract huge audiences, which ultimately boost the business. Big-grossing films are always welcome, but you can’t have such releases every week. Therefore, the industry needs continuously running small and medium budget films. This used to happen a lot in the pre-pandemic era, but everything has changed in this decade.
Dhurandhar is not simply a curse that silences the competition. It is more about the scheduling of films not being right by the industry. Yash took a smart decision by postponing Toxic’s clash with Dhurandhar: The Revenge, but it should have released on Good Friday (April 3, 2026), giving Ranveer Singh’s film a two-week open window. After that, Akshay Kumar starrer Bhoot Bangla was supposed to arrive on its scheduled date of April 10, 2026. This would have kept the box office ticking, unlike now, when the collections of Dhurandhar: The Revenge are in single digits on the third and fourth weekdays.
Therefore, the film industry needs to be smart about the release schedule. Two weeks is enough for a big film like Dhurandhar: The Revenge, as these films are usually front-loaded. Other films should release after that window. If a film has merit, it will work; Otherwise, it won’t matter whether it releases after two weeks or even five weeks.
Dhurandhar 2 is definitely a boon as far as business is concerned. However, that doesn’t mean that another star-led Bollywood film hasn’t worked in the past. If you look at the record of the last five years, there have been many big grossing films like Pathan, Jawan, Gadar 2, Stree 2, Animal, Chhaava, Saiyara and many others. But yes, for better business health the industry needs at least three to five tentpole films like Dhurandhar every year. I hope the success of Dhurandhar will bring positive changes in the film industry and filmmakers will start giving more importance to content than star power even in commercial entertainment.
