While the controversy over Jaya Bachchan being addressed as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’ continues, an old video interview of actress Aishwarya Rai, who is married to Abhishek Bachchan, has surfaced on the internet. In the video, Aishwarya reacts to being called ‘Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’.

During an old interview with NDTV, the actress is taken aback when she is introduced as ‘Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’. She says, “Oohoo… the title… oh my god!” before asking the interviewer to call her Aishwarya. She says, “Just the usual Aishwarya, the way you know me.”

When asked if ‘Rai Bachchan’ will be her official surname post marriage, the ‘Guru’ actor smiled and replied, “Aishwarya Rai as she is known professionally, who is married to Abhishek Bachchan. So, obviously, Aishwarya Bachchan. You can make whatever you want out of it.”

Aishwarya married Abhishek Bachchan in 2007. They have a daughter, Aaradhya.

She had strongly objected when Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh referred to Jaya Bachchan as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” during his address to the Rajya Sabha on July 29.

He said, “Sir, only Jaya Bachchan would have been enough. This is something new that women are being identified by their husbands’ names, as if they (women) have no existence or achievements of their own.”

In response, the Deputy Chairman smilingly reminded her that her full name on record is “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan”.

On Monday, Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar told Jaya Bachchan that if she has a problem with being called ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan’, then she should change her name in the official records of the Election Commission of India.
