WhatsApp is now testing a new feature that lets Android users directly translate chat messages within the app. This update is being rolled out through the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.12.25, and it brings an easy tool for people chatting in various languages. The best part? All translations are locally on your phone, which means that your messages remain private and safe. WhatsApp uses its own translation technology that works without sending any data to the outer server. Some users have already seen this feature in the chat Info screen, where they can download language packs and set translation preferences for individual chats or groups.
Once the feature is enabled, users can choose from a list of supported languages such as Hindi, Spanish, Arabic, Russian and Brazil. After selecting a language, WhatsApp will download a language pack in your device, allowing it to translate messages without the need of the Internet. Even there is an alternative pack that can automatically detect different languages - a useful addition to group chat where people can use more than one languages.
Translation settings can be seen in the chat information section of any conversation. Users can either turn on automatic translation for all messages in a chat or choose to translate specific messages manually by tapping them and selecting the translation option. This gives users more control over how they want to use the convenience. Since translations are on-devices, the confidentiality of your chat is never compromised. WhatsApp confirms that users choose to react to translation, but messages themselves are never shared with meta or any third party.
While this on-device approach to translation helps maintain end-to-end encryption, trading is that translation may not always be accurate as cloud-based services. WhatsApp admits that the results are for help, but may not be correct. Nevertheless, users have the option to provide feedback – such as whether a translation was missed or not understood – to help improve the convenience. The response is optional, and no message material is shared during the process.
Users can also manage and manage the downloaded language packs through the storage settings of the app. This is helpful if you are running less in space or want to remove a language that you do not need. Importantly, this feature is not just for private chats – this group also works in chat and public channels. This means that users can now understand shared materials in different languages, making communication easier in multilingual communities.
For now, this feature is rolling for a limited number of beta testers who update the latest WhatsApp beta via Google Play Store. A broad rollout is expected in the coming weeks, and WhatsApp is also planning to support more languages in future updates. If you are part of the beta program, it is worth checking whether the option to translate messages has appeared in your chat settings.
