Singer Nick Jonas has for the first time spoken openly about the difficult circumstances surrounding the birth of his and Priyanka Chopra’s daughter Malti Marie Chopra Jonas. speaking on Jai Shetty PodcastThe singer revealed that their daughter was born prematurely, weighed just 1 pound 11 ounces and was “basically purple” when she was born. Malti required six blood transfusions and several weeks of careful observation in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Jonas revealed how he and Chopra managed 12-hour hospital shifts during the COVID-19 pandemic and ensured Malti had round-the-clock care. “Being there every day and seeing other families going through a similar situation was both comforting and scary,” she said. After 3.5 months of rigorous care and gradual progress, the couple finally took Malti home.
How were Malti’s initial days?
The couple is shocked by Malti’s arrival. Jonas recalled that they were expecting her arrival in April 2022, but they were called earlier than anticipated. “She came into the world under very difficult circumstances, which I have never talked about,” he said. Despite the challenges of having a premature baby during the pandemic, with the dedication of the neonatal team, Malti’s weight gradually increased and stabilised.
What was the hospital routine like?
Jonas and Chopra took alternating 12-hour shifts at the hospital for months, ensuring Malti received constant care. The singer described the experience as “visceral”, leaving a lasting impression. Their days included close monitoring, coordination with doctors and understanding the feelings of having a fragile newborn while Covid restrictions limited outside support.
