A Muslim nurse working at the University of Texas Medical Branch made a video showing how she would retreat from a patient’s room if she found Fox News playing in the room. Fox News is a conservative news channel and the video was intended to be a sharp criticism of the current system, but it immediately drew criticism from ‘Nurse Ahlam’ as physicians take an oath to treat all patients equally without prejudice.As soon as the university became aware of the nurse’s video, UTMB announced an investigation and suspended the nurse. The health center initially said, “UTMB is aware of the social media post and is investigating. This individual’s access to work at any UTMB facility has been suspended pending the investigation.”“Following an investigation into the social media post, UTMB terminated the contract employee yesterday evening,” UTMB announced.But that didn’t end the debate as social media users said it was UTMB’s responsibility to ensure this doesn’t happen again. People demanded strict action against that particular nurse and said that if she is so biased then she should not work in any health facility. One wrote, “Thank you @utmbhealth for advocating for patient safety and not being politically motivated! Now, I would like to know if as a responsible health care body you have reported her actions to the Texas Board of Nursing? She needs to be disciplined for her serious actions.”Another wrote, “The fact that she treats people based on political views absolutely says a lot about her as a person. She’s definitely not someone I would want anyone to care about just for her. She would definitely want to kill any patient because of her political views.”“While I can appreciate the termination, it speaks to a culture that should be examined beyond this individual. How are people like this hired to begin with?” Another wrote.A third user wrote, “You need to look at your recruitment process. Hopefully it was a misalignment of values and not a performative act.”“Not very good! You need to restore trust, fire all Muslims, and tell patients that they will be taken care of regardless of their political or religious beliefs! This is absolutely appalling. He needs to be jailed and deported!” Another message demanded the dismissal of all Muslim employees.
