In India, if one is not able to secure a place in an IIT, one often decides to study abroad, especially in the US, for a technical field. A degree from the US is highly sought after for settling abroad, possibly from a big company like Google or Amazon. However, sometimes, the reality may be very different. Such was the case with a Reddit user who adores the onscreen persona, u/throwaway84483994.

The user shared his story on the subreddit r/DevelopersIndia, claiming that after completing his master’s degree in the US, he did not get a job and decided to return to India. The techie decided to take up a 2 LPA job at an EU fintech firm out of frustration. “Within a month, I joined this company out of pure desperation because I didn’t want to be unemployed anymore,” the Reddit user wrote.

The technical specialist’s work revolved around “full-stack development with a framework called Struts”. However, u/throwaway84483994 recently decided to leave despite having no other job offer in hand. “I have submitted my resignation this week and this company has a 3-month notice period. I don’t have any other offers yet, but I am actively applying,” he said.

Why did the technical expert resign?

The user listed the reasons for his resignation, mainly due to low salary. He revealed that it was almost impossible for him to save money on the Rs 2 LPA package in a tier 1 city.

The techie added, “I live in a tier 1 city, and most of my salary is spent just on commuting. The rest goes into paying bills, occasionally eating out, etc. This leaves me with literally a few hundred rupees at the end of the month, sometimes nothing.”

Another major factor was the long commute to office. “It takes me ~1.5 hours to get from home to work. This makes a total of ~3 hours a day for commuting,” he said.

The user was also unhappy with his coworkers’ behavior and believed his project was at a ‘dead-end’ before resigning.

Techie wants career advice after resigning

Currently, the user is completing his notice period. During this time, work is being done on interview preparation and skills. “At the moment my DSA skills are good and I am good at the fundamentals of system design,” said the technical expert.

However, he remained skeptical about the job market and sought advice. The techie wrote, “Have I taken the right decision by resigning without any offer?… I am looking for at least something around 8-9 LPA. Is that realistic in this job market?”
