  • Experts suggest nanotechnology is what makes these small moments so joyful and gives us hope

In today’s world, dating is like a never-ending software update – just when you think you’ve got it figured out, something new comes along. Once upon a time, love flourished through handwritten letters and poetic confessions. Now? It’s all about lazy “wyd” text.

Relationships, situations, textship—these days, we have the dreaded “What are we?” There are more labels to answer than a supermarket aisle. Question. And just when you thought the vocabulary of modern love was complete, we have a new word that’s making waves: nanoships.

Yes, nanoships are officially the new thing in the ever-evolving world of romance.

This year in swipe

Dating app Tinder recently released its annual ‘Year in Swipe’ report for 2024, providing an inside look at the pulse of modern dating in 2024. The report also released a survey of 8,000 single and actively dating people aged 18-34 (2,000 each from the UK, USA, Canada and Australia) between March 3 and 18, 2024. This research found that no romantic relationship will seem too short. Case.

Single people are finding meaning in even the smallest interactions – whether it’s something serious or just for fun, through this trend called nanoship, those little micro moments are leading to real possibilities.

What is this?

Picture this: You meet someone at a club or at a wedding, and there she is – that sweet, stolen moment of glances and shy smiles. You share a fleeting but adorable memory, a little bubble of connection that exists just for that moment. And that’s all, no strings, no follow up. This brief, heartfelt encounter is the perfect example of a nanoship – a little spark of romance that brightens your day and puts a smile on your face.

Whether it’s a quick spark you had with someone on the subway that you call an “iContactship” to the person who regularly sends you “Good morning” or “Shares your Reels on Instagram” messages. Nanoship is about finding joy in small interactions.

Think of it as “situations,” but time is brief and they are fleeting encounters that may only last a few hours, days, or a single conversation. Nanoships often don’t have much emotional depth or long-term intention.

It’s the kind of connection that can happen over a quick coffee, a shared moment at a party, or a fun chat on a dating app that ends as quickly as it began. This reflects the fast-paced nature of modern dating, where some interactions are enjoyed as they are, without any expectation that they will develop into something serious.

Mumbai-based relationship expert and author Shahzeen Shivdasani says many singles are finding happiness in these fleeting interactions.

“These little moments take center stage because, in the process of finding love, dating, and settling down, there are times when you are completely alone. Those are your concrete moments, where you discover who you are, and that understanding continues to grow and change,” she adds.

Why are nanochips so popular right now?

If relationships or circumstances aren’t for you right now, for whatever reason, experts also agree that nanotechnology may be the right thing for you.

Shahzeen tells us that it’s human to feel lonely sometimes and crave connection. In fact, data shows that 1 in 5 people around the world are lonely.

“These fleeting interactions provide a spark of hope to single people. They add a little pep to your step, a touch of excitement, and a reminder that something great could be on the horizon. It’s that sense of possibility and new opportunities that makes these little moments so joyful – they’re hopeful, and that hope is enough to keep us going,” Shahzeen concluded.
