More than 2,000 cases of Ebola outbreak in Congo, 754 dead in fastest growing case

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 2,000 confirmed cases with 754 deaths, according to the health ministry. Caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, the outbreak has become the fastest-growing on record, with health officials warning that transmission is outpacing efforts to stop it.According to the AP, government data released overnight showed 2,011 infections have been confirmed, of which 753 people are currently in isolation or receiving treatment in hospital, while 366 patients have recovered.According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, was officially declared on May 15 after weeks of unknown transmission.Earlier, the World Health Organization had said that at least 80 percent of new infections were emerging from unknown chains of transmission, making it harder for health officials to contain the disease. According to the Health Ministry, contact tracing coverage currently stands at 67 percent.Congolese health officials said suspected cases of Ebola have now been reported in Tshopo and Haut-Uele provinces, indicating the virus has spread beyond its original epicenter in Ituri.Response efforts remain under pressure, with health officials citing a lack of funding, attacks on health facilities and the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo as major obstacles to containing the outbreak. However, hope lies in new treatment trials. Clinical trials for potential treatments against the rare Bundibugyo strain began earlier this month, which currently has no approved vaccine or treatment.
