Mona Singh, who played a key role in ‘Lal Singh Chaddha’ opposite Aamir Khan, has credited the film for getting her the best roles. After dedicating a major part of her career to daily soaps, Mona has shifted her focus to films and OTT shows. She now aspires to do roles that challenge her ability as an actor. She is currently seen in ‘Munjya’, starring Sharvari Wagh in the lead role.

During the promotions of ‘Munjya’, Mona spoke about the most gratifying part of being an actor. She told us, “When you are able to connect with people, when people look up to you for the character you play, I got my first validation playing Jassi. Later, when ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ came on OTT, a lot of people reached out to me and said that we lost our parents during Covid and we connected and felt the same way you did as a mother and it was really overwhelming for me. After ‘Made in Heaven’, a lot of women reached out to me again, especially those who have gone through domestic abuse. As an actor, it is the biggest satisfaction for me that people start connecting with you because of your character.”

Mona Singh shared her thoughts on whether she feels an actor’s craft is dependent on box office success, “Well, I will give you the best example for this – right now, for the last two years, whatever work I am doing since 2022 is because of ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’. The film did not get great numbers at the box office, but I got great shows because of that film.”

“According to me, an actor’s talent is never wasted. It is always noticed. The film did not do well in theatres, but when it came on OTT, it blew out of proportion and that was the time when people got to see the different kinds of roles I was doing, which gave me different opportunities and people were ready to play different roles with me. I got many opportunities because of that. So, for me personally, I don’t think box office changes your career graph. Box office definitely gives you more popularity, makes your reach more wide, but your talent is never wasted.”

Mona revealed how she actively worked on her career choices and carved a niche for herself, “My biggest fear after Jassi was what I was going to do next. One thing I knew for sure was that I couldn’t get into another daily soap because everything would be compared to Jassi because that show was such a huge hit.”

She further added, “So, I decided to take a break from TV serials. At that time, there was no one to guide me in the industry. Whatever I am today; I am on my own. So, that phase was quite difficult for me and I was a bit scared about my next choice. That was the time when I started hosting shows and also participated in a few of them and then I realised that as an actor, whether you fail or succeed, it is very important to keep trying different things.”

He added, “It was very easy to get caught up in this mess mother in law daughter in law I would have loved to do sagas for the money, but I was sure that I didn’t want to do that because I was very clear that I didn’t want to follow the conventional path and create my own space. In 2014, there came a time when I thought to myself that I have done everything on TV, which is why I decided to take a break and moved to theatre. Of course, there isn’t a lot of money there, but you get to learn a lot about yourself as an actor.”

The actor is playing the lead role in ‘Munjya’ starring Sharvari Wagh.
